books: Share and Share Alike

I’m all for supporting writers by buying books. But being a struggling writer has put me in an ironic predicament: I simply cannot afford to spend $15 on a new toy.

This is when a used bookstore is very handy. Unfortunately, Las Vegas is not a city that supports them. (If you know of any, PLEASE let me know.)  So, I’ve taken to borrowing books from my friends. It’s fun, free and very environmentally friendly. The only trouble is that you have to be diligent in returning those books to friends. I promise to be good!

books: Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

I’ve been talking about my self too much on this blog. The best way to cure loneliness is to be less self-centered. So in an effort to do that, I’m returning to my original goal for cmoonreed.com: write cool reviews of books, movies and music.

So here you go.

As you may remember, most of my books got sacrificed in my move from Arizona to Vegas. The few that remain are lost in boxes. So I’ve been limited to the books in my family’s guest room. Thus I started reading Running with Scissors a few days ago. I’m about halfway through.

The book is a dark confessional sold as a comedy. I can see how it would be considered funny in a David Sedaris way, but I’ve yet to laugh. Burroughs is successful in that he is able to remind exactly how scary it was to be a child. I don’t like reliving that feeling. And yet, I continue reading. This is maybe a trick on his part, but it works. (Full discretion: I hate dark, confessional memoirs.)

The author does happen to have a cool website that is a pattern for hipster stationary: www.augusten.com

freelancing: Too Much Freedom?

Perhaps it’s the post-vacation blues. Or maybe it’s freelance-itis. But at 2pm today, about 24-hours after I returned “home” to Las Vegas, I had a crushing sense of panic and depression. It’s just so lonely being a writer. And the lack of structure is overwhelming. Now, I’m grateful for everything, but gratitude doesn’t pay the bills or cover the insanity-inducing drone of a fan spinning slowly in a silent room. To all you freelancers out there, have you ever felt this way?

My solution is to go to the gym and then return to the computer with a fresh attitude. Any other tips?

blogosphere: Freelance Folder

My super friend/former editor Pj Perez just sent me a link to this wonderful blog about all things freelance. So far, I’ve found the blog to be way awesome and totally helpful. Check it out.

blogosphere: The Hype Today

A pretty cool blog about “music, art, culture and activism” picked up my LA.Direct article about Dave Navarro. I have to give them credit for having good taste: Not only did TheHypeToday.com find MY article but they were also able to discern what I think is the most interesting and relevant part of the interview. writing process: Job Hunting & FaceBook Joining

I spent all day trolling the Internet for gainful employment. The opportunities were so sparse that I started getting a little down (Fie on you bad economy!). But I knew of one thing that I could do successfully: Join Facebook. People have been hounding me to do it for years. So, I finally did. Please feel free to be my friend! I like friends:

writing process: Check out my Dave Navarro Article

This little number was for LA.Direct Magazine. I don’t know if this is available in hard copy yet, but it’s already up on the World Wide Web. However, if you don’t live in LA, you may have to content yourself with the online version. You must check it out, if only for the fabulous photo of Dave, which I shall not reproduce here.

Dave Navarro 2.0

New Projects, New Technology and a New Round of Stardom

by C. Moon Reed

Born and raised in the City of Angels, Dave Navarro is a product of LA. Or is LA, in part, a product of him? Each year, hundreds of edgy, young dreamers move to Hollywood in hopes of repeating Navarro’s dark, yet sexy, brand of success… <<READ MORE!!!!!>>

photography header: Rainy Sunset in Honolulu

Hawaii is so pretty that it takes all the work out of being a photographer.

Normally, I try to make my web page headers reflect my location. But due to the extreme beauty of tropical islands you can expect a lot more photos of Hawaii (even though I returned to the mainland late last night).

this writer’s life: Hawaii

Perhaps you’ve been wondering about my mysterious silence. Well, I’m in Hawaii. I’ve been here for nearly a week. Though I had these great ambitions about getting lots of writing done, there’s something about tropical paradise that makes you want to sit on the beach and do nothing. It’s great. Not productive. But great.
